Vyšší Brod

Vyšší Brod, the southernmost town in the Czech Republic, is situated approximately 4 km from the borders with Austria, right in the centre of the natural park called “Vyšebrodsko”, which is an extensive area spreading between the right river bank of and the state border from Horní Dvořiště to Přední Výtoň. The history of the town goes back to the beginning of the 13th century when the town was established as a market place on one of the oldest trade path. This path was leading through Vyšší Brod pass from Danube to Bohemia in the Roman times. However the first written record appeared in the deed of donation from the 1st July 1259 of Sir Vok of Rožmberk, the founder of the Vyšší Brod monastery. In this deed he donated to the monastery a large territory consisting of only one settlement at that time which was the market place of Vyšší Brod. The Vyšší Brod monastery belonging to the Cistercians, became a spiritual centre for the whole dominium of the Rožmberks. The sovereigns of this most important noble family in Bohemia also established in the abbey the place of their last rest. Thanks to its special beauty and the unique cultural importance, the monastery is today listed as a national cultural monument. During the guided tour you can see the fascinating premises of the Gothic architecture.

Cyclists can also enjoy the country because of the important Šumava artery leading through the town and thanks to the newly opened border crossing which enable you to go for a bike ride along the breathtaking Austrian borderland. Vyšší Brod and its fantastic location in the middle of forests and the proximity of the river Vltava and Lipno Reservoir off er you a large number of sports and recreational activities throughout the year.
